The Haft-Sin Table

What is the Haft-Sin Table?

The Haft-Sin table, translating to the "Seven Seens", which is the one of the letters for "S" in Persian, is a tabletop arrangement with seven different symbolic items that represent concepts from love to old-age. This table is organized and admired during Nowruz, and contains items that all begin with the letter "Seen".

The Seven Seens ("s")

Sabzeh

Wheat, barley, mung bean, or lentil sprouts growing in a dish. Symbolizes rebirth.

Seer

Garlic. Symbolizes the medicine and health.

Serkeh

Vinegar. Symbolizes old-age and patience.

Semanu

Sweet pudding made from wheat germ. Symbolizes affluence

Seeb

Apple. Symbolizes beauty.

Senjed

Dried oleaster wild olive fruit. Symbolizes love.

Somaq

Sumac fruit. Symbolizes (the color of) sunrise.
